Long Run Sunday – 11.7M

Sunday, September 11th, 2011

Today is my “long run day” and my schedule called for a 13-15 miler depending on how well I’d recovered from the race last weekend. As I’ve been having some troubles with my ankle I decided I’d drive to work to run there, as it’s completely flat, to give me legs less stress. The only problem was I realised halfway there that I’d forgotten my inhaler meaning I’d only be able to last 15 minutes before being unable to breathe so I had to turn back :/

Once I got home I sacked the idea of running at work off and thought today I could try to run what appears to be toughest (hilly) part of the Coventry Half Marathon instead. As I’d switched plans I had the random idea of bandaging my ankle – having no idea what I’m doing  - but It seemed to perform well on the most scientific of tests… pacing up and down the living room.

The run itself was fine… 11.7M in total. The “tough” section of the Coventry Half Marathon I didn’t find as tough as I would have thought so that was a bit of a confidence boost. My ankle seemed to hold out and felt better during and after the run than it did on Wednesday and Thursday so I might try the strapping again on my 6m run on Tuesday.

Distance: 11.7M
Mile Splits: 8:36, 8:29, 8:51, 8:45, 8:35, 8:37, 8:31, 8:52, 8:53, 8:44, 8:37, 5:54 (last 0.7)

Weekly Update: A Couple of Runs and Ankle Pain

Saturday, September 10th, 2011

For the past month or so I’ve been having problems with what I  first thought was my achilles but it would appear to be between the achilles and sticky out bit  of the ankle. It’s quite difficult to pin-point  as I can only really feel it when I’m running or slightly while walking.  Possibly the posterior tibial tendon? The pattern seems to be: mild discomfort during run,  a bit tender the next day and the day after that it’s fine.

During the 10m race last Sunday I developed some tightness in my right calf (soleus?). Walking back to the car wasn’t much fun even though it was only 0.25m. I’m presuming these things must be linked.

My legs were drained and tired up until Wednesday but I decided to take I an extra day off and went for a run on Thursday evening after work – just a little tester to see how my legs were feeling in general and to see how my ankle felt afterwards. I could feel it during the run… quite uncomfortable but managed the 5k easily enough.

In the morning the ankle was a bit sore but it eased within a couple of hours. By the time I’d got home from work I felt it was good enough run on. So last night I ran 6m  at an easy pace with the ankle ache coming on between miles 2 and 4… with the last 2 ache free. hmm.

I iced the area when I got home and today it’s feeling pretty much the same as yesterday… a bit stiff and sore coming downstairs early-on but it’s mid-day now and while it feels okay I can  still “feel it” while walking.

Tomorrow is supposed to be long run day and I’m due a 13-15 miler so I might have to cut that short. I shall see how it feels in the morning.

Weekly update!

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

Got a bit lazy with posting so here’s a weeks worth of little updates…

Monday (16th)

As planned I ran 3.5 miles on Monday night in 32:16.

Distance: 3.5 miles
Time: 32:12
Splits: 9:41, 9:28, 9:01 with the final 0.5 at 4:03

Five a side after work for an hour was easier than usual… the running has helped! Felt sore though up until Saturday(!) so no running. Really felt it in my legs and back… not to mention the blisters on my feet. Was hoping to be able to run on Thursday and Friday but it wasn’t possible.

Ran an easy two miles to get back in to the swing of things I should have done more really but I didn’t get out until after 8pm and it was getting dark. Darkness, country lanes and dark running clobber don’t mix well!

Distance: 2 miles
Time: 18:10

New Ache!

After my run last Monday I started to get a “bit of an ache” on the top of my foot which I’ve never had before. Still managed to play football with it and it seemed fine on the Wednesday. It came back again on Friday lasting until yesterday. Strange one… doesn’t hurt to touch, poke or kick a football with and I can only really feel it when lifting my toes. Hopefully it’s not a stress fracture? I guess that’s the worst case scenario and I’d assume a stress fracture would hurt more. Will have to wait and see if it comes back again.

Won’t be running until Wednesday as I’m travelling down to Milton Keynes tomorrow night to watch Blackpool play them in the cup.

Couple of Runs

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

Yeah, so in the last post I mentioned my shins were sore. This lasted until Friday so  it took about 4 days for them  to recover to a stage where they weren’t painful to touch (with a deep finger-poke). As I was off to Bristol for the weekend I decided to wait until Monday to run.

After a bit of a heavy weekend I still wasn’t feeling 100% on Monday but knew I had to run as it had been a week since my shin pain – anyway got out and managed 3.25 miles.

Halfway through the run, up a long incline, I get a bit of ache in the shin region but I could run through/with it so I didn’t mind.  Anyway  when I get to around the second mile I start to feel my feet going numb(argh!)

I had a few problems with this in my first month of running – I put it down to tight calves and since then I’ve been fine. I had to stop and walk until this went away. Plus I was knackered and struggling!  Walked for about half a mile and then carried on without the numbness coming back which is good.

Also saw 3 chickens in the road… alive.

Distance: 3.25 miles
Time: 33:38

Felt fine the next day, no pain anywhere so as I’d planned I did quicker two miles.

I keep noticing a lot of discarded brown McDonald’s bags and two more tonight… how do they end up in country lanes? There isn’t a McDonald’s for about 5 miles?

Distance: 2.05 miles
Time: 18:21

What’s Next?

Having a rest day today and then I’m running Thursday (easy 3) and then again Friday (4ish) and staying with family up north over the weekend so I’ll take that as a rest.

More pain… Shins this time.

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

I’m very frustrated at the moment.

After my successful 5 miles on Thursday I thought I’d take a couple of days off (which I did) – had a few drinks on Saturday so didn’t feel up to it on Sunday either and besides my shins and thigh felt a bit tender to touch still.

Monday night arrives and I decide to do three miles but wasn’t able to… my shins were hurting during an uphill bit and I had to stop – not even completing a mile. So, back to the car I walked a bit and then ran a bit and then walked a bit so I ended up with 1.5 miles (ish)

I guess my legs didn’t like the sudden leap to 5 miles which is a shame as they seemed to be enjoying it at the time.

This is problem number three so far: knee, hip, shin. Knee had me out (resting it) for two weeks while the hip problem had me out for 3! I’ve only been running since 14th April and been able to run for just two months out of three.

It’s a shame but I guess it’s to be expected with a job where you sit in a chair all day, 4/5 years of practically no exercise and the extra weight: my legs are weak!

I’m hoping they’ll be okay tomorrow but I guess I should just wait until there’s no pain when prodding them.
