Weekly Update: A Couple of Runs and Ankle Pain

Saturday, September 10th, 2011

For the past month or so I’ve been having problems with what I  first thought was my achilles but it would appear to be between the achilles and sticky out bit  of the ankle. It’s quite difficult to pin-point  as I can only really feel it when I’m running or slightly while walking.  Possibly the posterior tibial tendon? The pattern seems to be: mild discomfort during run,  a bit tender the next day and the day after that it’s fine.

During the 10m race last Sunday I developed some tightness in my right calf (soleus?). Walking back to the car wasn’t much fun even though it was only 0.25m. I’m presuming these things must be linked.

My legs were drained and tired up until Wednesday but I decided to take I an extra day off and went for a run on Thursday evening after work – just a little tester to see how my legs were feeling in general and to see how my ankle felt afterwards. I could feel it during the run… quite uncomfortable but managed the 5k easily enough.

In the morning the ankle was a bit sore but it eased within a couple of hours. By the time I’d got home from work I felt it was good enough run on. So last night I ran 6m  at an easy pace with the ankle ache coming on between miles 2 and 4… with the last 2 ache free. hmm.

I iced the area when I got home and today it’s feeling pretty much the same as yesterday… a bit stiff and sore coming downstairs early-on but it’s mid-day now and while it feels okay I can  still “feel it” while walking.

Tomorrow is supposed to be long run day and I’m due a 13-15 miler so I might have to cut that short. I shall see how it feels in the morning.

Half Marathon Training Update

Friday, September 2nd, 2011

My half marathon training begun at the start of July after I’d taken a weeks holiday in Spain after the Asics Arden 9 mile race.

The goal was to extend my long run of 10-12 miles up to 16 miles and hitting that distance twice before the half marathon on the 2nd October.

My monthly totals since I started have been 129 miles for July and 120 for August which is an increase from my previous high mileage month (May) of 90 miles. September should follow the same amount of mileage as July and August even with an easier couple of weeks leading up to the race.

Another Race!

In preparation for the half marathon I’ve decided to add a 10 mile race on the 4th September and the John Fraser 10 is conveniently close / on the right date. This will give me a chance to test out my new found speed/stamina – I’m hoping for a time of 01:15 but I’m not sure I’ll be able to manage that after reading previous race reports: “definitely hilly”, “it’s hill after hill after hill”, “knackered”

Here’s the elevation profile taken from last years race:

Aches and Pains

I’ve got a problem with my right anke/achilles/soleus – hard to pinpoint – and I’ve had it for over a month – it seems to get better with a day of rest after a run and during the run it’s fine. I just hope it doesn’t get any worse as it gets closer to the half marathon.

First year of running

Thursday, April 14th, 2011

Been a while… I’m still going.

Yesterday marked a year since my first run back on the 13th April 2010.

That first time I managed 1.25 miles in 12:29 (10 min/mi) weighing in at 14st 5lbs. Last weekend I entered my third 10k race and managed 46:45 which of course I’m very happy with. Nowadays I’m weighing in at 11st 8lbs which is helping ;)

I really need to regularly update this blog again to be able to look back on where I’ve come from and jot down my plans.  Also this week I was stuck as to when my foot injury occurred and realised if I’d have logged everything it’d have made finding out easier.

So yes.. the blog is back.  This weekend I’ll write up my race reports of my three 10k races so far (56:13 in Dec, 47:56 in March and the 46:45 in April).

I Like Running in the Rain! – 7 miles(!)

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

It was raining pretty much all day here yesterday. The last time I ran in the rain I ran 5 miles for the first time so my thinking was do try and go further and I decided upon 7 miles. Mostly because my route is a 3.5 mile loop.

Planned on running it the usual way around and take a sip of water at my car halfway and then go  back around the way I came.

I planned to run it around 10:30 minute mile pace and had to keep telling myself to go slower and try and keep to 10 minute miles at least. Got halfway and felt fine… soaked wet through but fine…  took a quick sip and went back the way I came.

I managed the second 3.5 miles easier than I thought the last 2 miles are mostly downhill so I picked up the pace a bit.

So, that’s the furthest I’ve run… by two miles. I’ll probably do five miles a couple of times next week and then a seven the week after that.

Today there’s a bit of ache around the knees and at the top of my leg but nothing a day off shouldn’t cure. My earlier slight foot worry also seems to have gone completely.

I’ve included garmin details below.

Distance: 7 Miles
Time: 1:08:13
Mile Splits: 10:09, 10:01, 9:25, 9:51, 10:15, 9:35, 8:55

Weekly update!

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

Got a bit lazy with posting so here’s a weeks worth of little updates…

Monday (16th)

As planned I ran 3.5 miles on Monday night in 32:16.

Distance: 3.5 miles
Time: 32:12
Splits: 9:41, 9:28, 9:01 with the final 0.5 at 4:03

Five a side after work for an hour was easier than usual… the running has helped! Felt sore though up until Saturday(!) so no running. Really felt it in my legs and back… not to mention the blisters on my feet. Was hoping to be able to run on Thursday and Friday but it wasn’t possible.

Ran an easy two miles to get back in to the swing of things I should have done more really but I didn’t get out until after 8pm and it was getting dark. Darkness, country lanes and dark running clobber don’t mix well!

Distance: 2 miles
Time: 18:10

New Ache!

After my run last Monday I started to get a “bit of an ache” on the top of my foot which I’ve never had before. Still managed to play football with it and it seemed fine on the Wednesday. It came back again on Friday lasting until yesterday. Strange one… doesn’t hurt to touch, poke or kick a football with and I can only really feel it when lifting my toes. Hopefully it’s not a stress fracture? I guess that’s the worst case scenario and I’d assume a stress fracture would hurt more. Will have to wait and see if it comes back again.

Won’t be running until Wednesday as I’m travelling down to Milton Keynes tomorrow night to watch Blackpool play them in the cup.
