My Running Goals for (the rest of) 2010

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

I’ve been running for four months as of today and I thought it was about time I started setting myself a few goals. I’ll do a follow up post at the end of the year to see how many I’ve managed to achieve.

Goal 1: Sub 55 minute 10k
Not yet run the distance but it feels like I can. I’ve done 5 miles a few times now and it’s feeling pretty comfortable – my best time so far (without pushing it) is 47 minutes so I think this is pretty achievable. Next summer I’d hope to be running  sub 50 minute 10k but I don’t think I can manage that in 4 months? Guess I’ll find out.

Goal 2: Sub 26 minute 5k
28:25 is my best at this distance and I’ll give it a go every so often over the same route.

Goal 3: Sub 16 minute 2 miles
My best time in training has been 17 minutes flat so I’d have to increase the speed I’m currently capable of. Will maybe do a two mile time trial over the same route to measure progress every month or two. (Does contain hills)

and finally
To keep running! I’m enjoying so much that I don’t think this will be a problem unless I’m forced to take a break through injury.

Hip hip okay! I begin again…

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

Went out for my first run since my hip problems tonight. I’ve been meaning to since Thursday last week but had a bbq. weekend at my parents up north and poor time management the past couple of nights. (“I’ll go in the morning instead.. it’s too late now” – get up at 6am? as if!)

I was blowing a bit even after starting off slowly and completed 2.1 miles in 20 mins /4 secs.

The important thing is my hip feels alright… woohoo!

Not bad, will have a day of rest tomorrow and then back on it friday evening.

Bad Hip and Chest Infections

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

Here’s a bit of an update as these pages have remained pretty silent since the 9th!

After my hip issues last week I decided to take a couple of days off. This increased to five days yesterday after a full blown chest infection decided to hit me and running and uncontrollable coughing don’t really mix well. So on Tuesday night with my lungs feeling better, although still with ‘a bit of a cough’ I decided to try a three miler to get myself back in to it. Fail.

I started running and fifteen paces in felt quite good aside from my chest which felt a bit tight… then I felt the hip pain returning so I turned back. 0.25 miles! Not in the best of moods after that, I’d have thought it’d be alright after almost a week. I was wrong. It didn’t feel right for an hour or so afterwards but not overly painful.

So, what now? Not sure… Plan on giving it a rest until Saturday and try again then. Very frustrating – all I want to do is get out there!

In the meantime I’ve just purchased Born to Run: The Hidden Tribe, the Ultra-Runners… from Amazon which should arrive tomorrow has now arrived, so I’ll be mostly reading that.

Juneathon Day 5 – Another three miles

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

Got a bit of a cough /sore throat coming on, annoyingly, so I thought I’d attempt another three miler which I managed without problem. Felt like I could go on a lot further tonight.. might have a stab at four miles late next week.

No doubt i’ll awaken tomorrow morning with the the bug in full force. Hope not though!

My First Juneathon

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

After reading about previous Juneathon efforts on various blogs while digging through archives I’ve decided to give it a go myself.

What is it?

“It’s a month of exercise. Running, cycling, walking, rowing, weights, whatever. Just do something every day in June.” – See Juneathon FAQ over at Jog Blog.

My Goal

To run every day in June and I’m also going to use this as a perfect opportunity to cut out the booze completely!

It’s going to be tough but I’m up for a summer challenge.

Just remembered it’s World Cup month! New personal rule: beer is allowed on England match days.
